KASHEF CHOWDHURY: SISTEM BANGUNAN, LINGKUNGAN, DAN MANUSIA DALAM PRAGMATIC DESIGN

Kashef Chowdhury adalah seorang Arsitek dari Bangladesh sebuah negara dengan perubahan iklim paling drastis dan dikelilingi oleh perairan. Sebagai negara kelahiran dan tempatnya dibesarkan, Bangladesh memberikan banyak pengaruh pada metode desain dan karakteristik bangunan dari Kashef Chowdhury. Beliau cenderung menggunakan metode desain berbasis pragmatik terutama menggunakan material lokal serta memperhatikan sejarah dan budaya lokal Bangladesh untuk menghasilkan bangunan yang sederhana namun fungsional. Penggunaan material setempat memberikan tampak visual bangunan yang sangat lokal, namun dibaliknya, terdapat respon terhadap konteks serta pertimbangan dan pendekatan pada beberapa sistem. Berdasarkan latar belakang tersebut, artikel ini akan membahas metode desain yang digunakan oleh Kashef Chowdhury yang menerapkan konsep pragmatik terutama penggunaan material lokal dengan membahas beberapa proyeknya menggunakan teori dari buku Design in Architecture: Architecture and Human Sciences karya Geoffrey Broadbent. Di akhir pembahasan, akan ditemukan bahwa penggunaan material lokal sebagai bagian dari konsep pragmatik dalam bangunan bukan hanya memberikan identitas bagi bangunan, namun juga menjamin aspek fungsional terutama pada sistem bangunan, manusia, dan lingkungan.
