Indonesia merupakan salah satu negara yang paling kaya dalam keanekaragaman hayati di dunia, sekaligus negara yang memiliki kekayaan budaya yang sangat beragam. Salah satu produk yang dihasilkan masyarakat yang merupakan produk kearifan lokal adalah anyaman bambu atau pun rotan yang dapat digunakan masyarakat untuk kehidupan sehari dari, seperti pot bunga, bakul, tas, dompet dan hiasan rumah tangga. Universitas Mercu Buana
merupakan salah satu universitas swasta besar di Jakarta dengan jumlah mahasiswa berkisar 30.000 orang. Dengan banyaknya mahasiswa tersebut sudah dapat dipastikan limbah kertas yang dihasilkan juga cukup banyak. Jika
kertas-kertas itu diabaikan, maka lama-kelamaan akan menumpuk dan mengotori lingkungan kampus. Biasanya kertas-kertas tersebut akan dijual ke tukang loak. Untuk dapat memanfaatkan sampah kertas dari Universitas Mercu
Buana dibutuhkan peran serta masyarakat terutama ibu-ibu yang bertempat tinggal di sekitar kampus, salah satunya adalah ibu-ibu di Kelurahan Meruya Selatan. Kegiatan ini juga akan membantu ibu-ibu dalam meningkatkan
kreativitas, keterampilan dan peningkatkan ekonomi keluarga dengan menggantikan bahan baku bambu dan rotan di ganti menjadi kertas bekas.
